Let's talk Polaroid...

Reminiscing on my first new camera, and learning to make each shot count.

...a Polaroid camera. You may remember the exact model - a Polaroid One-step SX-70, the model James Garner and Mariette Hartley would playfully flirt back and forth with in those late 70's and early 80's commercials. That gloss white finish, the catchy rainbow stripe and iconic whrrrrr of the camera ejecting a yet-to-be revealed image. Those were fun and relatively simple times.

What you shot was what you got.

Photography on-demand - much more satisfying than the wait time when you sent in rolls of film at your favourite lab, fingers crossed. And oh, the rolls of film I would go through - courtesy of my Pentax SLR.

To be fair, it wasn't uncommon to find me with a borrowed little point n' shoot, the kind with a little film cartridge you popped into place. But, the One-step was MY first new camera, and the one I learned to think out my shots on, as you could burn through a film pack in no time at all. And then, like now, film packs are pricey.

With the DLSR era, it seems we've come full circle - back to photography on-demand, with the added ability to easily edit and print our work, no darkroom required.

Oh, and about those One-step cameras?

Well, Polaroid re-introduced the One-step a few years back, and, in keeping with the times, it features Bluetooth. Frames are no longer just a standard white, there's now a broad selection in frame designs and film emulsions. It also allows the camera to be app driven, allowing for greater creativity including double exposures, among other features, because, why not?

And yes, I own one,

Full circle.

It all started with.....

Taken with my original Polaroid SX-70,back when I was rocking a satin ball jacket and yes, that's a Mr. Bill pin.

Do you shoot Polaroid?
